If your GE is crashing and giving your an error, a little trick that you might have to do. (I myself had to use this)
- Go to your source folder for the game
- Go into the Release Folder
- Right click on ge.exe
- Properties
- Compatibility
- Run as "Windows XP Service pack 2"
- Apply / Ok
this should stop the ge from crashing on you.

The Windows media diagnostics only checked if the player was available on your version of Windows, and it did not find any issues
Did you see if the issue occurs in the Safe mode?
